Money and financial planning was never a topic of discussion in my childhood home. Like most people from the Post World War Two Era, my father believed his union job offered lifetime employment, and that the combination of his pension and Social Security check would allow him to retire in style. Sadly, he was laid off from his union job after 30 years with the same company. And as he learned a few short years later, his Social Security benefits barely paid the home mortgage, and his small union pension went entirely towards a senior medical insurance plan. Clearly, his idea of retirement planning was unacceptable.

Small Steps Towards Success

For years I had tried different at home business systems. I went the usual route of joining various network marketing opportunities with friends and family, and at one point actually had a bit of residual income coming in each month. But for one reason or another, the business was unsustainable and withered on the vine (so to speak). I spent a lot of time and emotional energy building home businesses, only to see other people achieve their goals while I struggled to break even. And please, don’t get me wrong, I am convinced the network marketing business idea is the greatest thing on earth for most people. It just hasn’t panned out for me yet.

After doing a considerable amount of research online, I found that the fastest and easiest way to make money from home was to build a blog and use free online traffic to my blog to earn commissions from affiliate sales. Remember what was driving my ambition here. I was (and remain) terrified that I will retire dependent upon Social Security like my father. I can’t and won’t go there. And you don’t have to either.

As I ventured into the online marketing world I felt overwhelmed by the amount of things I felt I needed to learn. Frankly, the whole idea of competing with Fortune 500 companies, and marketing products to a global market online scared me. But I learned an important and simple concept early on in my marketing career: simply put, all you can do is all you can do. You take one day at a time, and you learn one new skill at a time.

I started simple (baby steps, if you will) with how to create a free blog and how to post content to my blog. I then started to focus on how to get free traffic to my blog, which took me into the world of “search engine optimization” and keyword research. When the affiliate sales began to come in, I began to realize that yes, this is something I can do. And it is something I believe you can do.

First, find a business opportunity or product you would be proud to share with your family and friends. Make sure it is legitimate, and is something you believe in your heart you can do successfully.

Second, when you find the perfect opportunity or marketing system, study what the top earners in that business are doing and copy their methods until you know enough about online marketing to do it your way.
